Info Please

Did you know that today in history:
William the Conquerer defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings 1066
In 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize on this day.
You can find out interesting facts like these, plus go behind today's news, sports and weather at Info Please. This is a potentially valuable resource for school children as well. There's a children's Almanac with interesting stuff like "All about Books" "Creatures of all Kinds" and other topics. If you're having difficulty writing a paper, check out the homework center. There you'll find punctuation rules, help with difficult words [do I want to say "hanged" or "hung"; "farther" or "further"] and tips on essay writing. Equally helpful resources are provided in math, science, history and geography.
If you like looking at almanacs, encyclopedias and dictionaries then this is a site you'll want to bookmark because it has it all.

The Complete Pricing Game Directory!

This would be a sure hit with Rosie O'. I had to add this site to our log because Entertainment Weekly got the URL wrong. This fortunecity neighbor has chronicled the pricing games from The Price is Right, including photos of set changes over the years, rules and tips.

Where's George

Ok, this is pretty frivolous, but isn't most everything on the web really? This site maps the journeys of registered dollar bills. You register the serial number of a bill you have and you can check later to see where it's ended up (if somebody else plays, too). Kind of interesting -- suggested by EW.

Historic Audio Archives

Make history come alive through the actual voices of historical people. (includes funny gaffs as well as very serious subjects)

The Heart Preview Gallery

The Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia came up with this well-designed site to tell the kids what's the what on hearts. Hear heart beats, look inside a beating heart or check out the heart's role in pop culture.

Name That Theme Song!

Here's a quiz we can all win! Match the tune playing with its movie or TV show. I correctly got The A-Team and Batman in my first two tries. Try it yourself.

Dan's Screen Shot Movie Quiz

Everybody loves a quiz...but this one is just for the serious movie watchers. ID four movie stills correctly each week and earn a degree in movies. If you don't know, guess anyway, because the funniest guesses are posted as well.

Cybercinema

This site is educational on a different level than educational web adventures. It is a site by our own UofI's English department dealing with depictions of artificial intelligence in film. I didn't find anything on Star Trek's Data (yet), but there's tons on HAL. One theme dealt with is the android's view of self. There are images and sound files.

Educational Web Adventures

I found a few cool links in last week's Entertainment Weekly and this was by far the best of the bunch! This is a fun interactive site to teach kids (and adults) about art. I tried the Art Detective Case of grandma's painting and I learned a lot.

The Practice

Oooooh! This should have been a Halloween episode! Of course, we pretty much knew how it had to end, but it was exciting getting there!
